Elbow

One does not have to play tennis to suffer from tennis elbow.

Elbow injuries are frequently caused by falls on an outstretched arm, heavy or repetitive lifting, strenuous pushing and pulling, sudden jerking forces, a direct blow to the elbow, overuse, throwing, racquet sports, prolonged direct pressure on the elbow, and direct trauma from sports and motor vehicle collisions.

Common elbow injuries include:

  • Sprain of ligaments
  • Strain of muscles and tendons
  • Torn ligaments
  • Olecranon bursitis
  • Medial epicondylitis (Golfer’s elbow)
  • Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)
  • Ulnar and radial neuritis
  • Bone dislocations
  • Bone fractures

Symptoms include:

  • Elbow pain
  • Soreness
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Locking sensation
  • A grating sound during movement
  • Problems using the arm
  • Difficulty bending or straightening the elbow
  • Difficulty turning the forearm (palm up to palm down)
  • Deformed appearance

Treatment of elbow injuries includes conservative care with medication and physical therapy to reduce inflammation, pain, and stiffness, and gentle exercises to maintain and improve mobility and strength.

In cases of more extensive elbow injury where conservative treatment fails, our patients are evaluated by a board-certified orthopedic surgeon to determine if further progress can be made with interventions such as injections and surgery.

Patients who undergo surgical procedures then undergo post-surgical physical rehabilitation under our supervision to maximize the range of motion, strength, and function of their elbow.

Other Upper Extremities Injuries

  • Back/Lumbar

Approximately 80% of adults experience a back injury in their lifetime.

  • Hand/Wrist

Pain in the hands or wrists is more common than ever, thanks to the prevalence of smartphones and computer-focused work environments.

  • Neck/Cervical

Neck injuries can vary from a simple poor posture, motor vehicle collisions, fall, excessive neck motion, to a systemic disease such as arthritis.

  • Shoulder

Most common shoulder pain is due to tendon inflammation, muscle strain, dislocation, disuse, arthritis, and in rare cases fractures.
